Thailand Visa Conversion: Tourist Visa to Business Visa (Non-B Visa)

July 1, 2024

In recent years, Thailand has emerged as a popular destination for global investors and businesspeople. To accommodate the growing demand, the Thai Immigration Bureau allows for the conversion of a tourist visa (Tourist Visa) to a business visa (Non-B Visa). However, this application process has several requirements and detailed document preparation. This article outlines the criteria and steps for converting a tourist visa to a business visa.

First, it’s important to note that, except for holders of a visa on arrival, other visa holders can apply for a change of visa type, provided their original visa is valid for more than 15 days.

During the application process, a range of documents must be prepared. To ensure a smooth application, applicants need to complete the application for change of visa type form (TM.86 or TM.87), submit a passport valid for at least 6 months, provide a 4×6 cm photo, pay a handling fee of 2,000 baht, and submit English academic and foreign employment certificates certified by the embassy and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Additionally, proof of education and work experience in the format specified by the Immigration Bureau is required.

Employers also need to submit several documents, including a statement outlining the reasons for hiring foreign workers, proof of employment, a company registration certificate, and a shareholder list issued within the last 6 months. Other required documents include VAT registration forms (PP.20, PP.09, and PP.01), the latest annual financial statements certified by the Ministry of Commerce or the Tax Bureau, corporate income tax documents certified by the Tax Bureau (PND 50), and a copy of the personal income tax filings of Thai employees (PND.1). If the company is supported by the BOI (Thailand Board of Investment), relevant BOI documents must also be included. Additionally, companies should provide color photographs showing the company’s exterior, signboard, house number, employees, and office environment. If water and electricity bills are not included in PND.50 (page 5, line 3), a lease contract and receipts for water, electricity, and telephone bills for the past three months must be submitted. Lastly, a detailed map of the company’s location is required.

The application process involves several steps: First, prepare the documents and ensure that everything is complete and meets the requirements. Next, visit the Immigration Bureau to submit the application form and all required documents, along with the handling fee. The Immigration Bureau will then review the application and verify all information, which typically takes about 15 days.

Although converting a tourist visa to a business visa (Non-B Visa) may be complex, being well-prepared and providing all necessary documents can help ensure a smooth application process. For foreigners looking to start a business or work in Thailand, understanding and following these steps is essential for successfully obtaining a business visa.
